“JESUS First Means Death to Sin”

August 9, 2020 Pastor: Verne Nakasone Series: Colossians

Passage: Colossians 3:5–3:5

Foothill Bible Church August 9, 2020
“JESUS First
Means Death to Sin”
Colossians 3:5

The theme of Colossians is Jesus first.

Chapters 1-2 portray
Jesus as sovereign, superior, and sufficient. Chapters 3-4
portray surpassing and satisfying life of Christian. The
emphasis is on how the Christian lives.

1A. The Command - “Put to death your members”
(Romans 6:5-12)

2A. The Contrast – “which are on the earth”
(1 Corinthians 10:12-13)

3A. The Conduct – “fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil
desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry”

1B. Immorality

  • 1C. Fornication (Hebrews 13:4)

  • 2C. Uncleanness (Mark 7:17-23)

3C. Passion

4C. Evil desire

2B. Idolatry – “and covetousness, which is idolatry”
(1 Corinthians 10:14; 1 Kings 11:1-13)

How may you and I put sin to death in us?

  • 1. We must understand and embrace our position and
relationship with Christ. Christ is my Savior and Lord.
He has made me a new person. He has delivered and
rescued me from sin’s dominion and power. I am
indwelt by the Holy Spirit and am to be filled with the
Spirit, so I do not fulfill the desires of the flesh
(Galatians 5:16) but instead exemplify the fruit of the
    Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

  • 2. We must understand that what we look at and think
about affects our heart and mind which affects our
    words and deeds.

  • 3. We must understand that seeking help from another
Christian is good and right so we may honor Christ with
    our life.
