God is at Work Through Trials
Passage: James 1:2–1:4
The recipients of this letter had fallen into various trials. In his opening message, James points them to God’s Word which instructs our perspective about our trials and reminds us of the divine purpose of our trials.
1A. YOU NEED TO KNOW THE DIVINE PURPOSE OF TRIALS (1:2-3)
1B. The purpose of joy, verse 2.
2B. The purpose of testing, verse 3.
3B. The purpose of producing endurance, godliness, and spiritual maturity.
2A. YOU NEED TO RESPOND IN A GOD GLORIFYING WAY TO TRIALS (1:4)
1B. The responsibility of the Christian to trials.
2B. The results in the Christian because of trials.
3B. The reward of the Christian from God, verse 12.
This is such a radical proposal, that I should receive a trial humbly and respond wisely. And how surprising the command is that I am to let patience work in me. God is working in me through the trial (Philippians 1:6, 2:13).
