The Test of Faith - Wisdom From Above, Part 2
Passage: James 3:14–3:16
James has cautioned us to watch our words (3:1-12). The following passage addresses the application of this instruction.
1A. THE CRITICAL QUESTION (3:13a)
1B. What wisdom is not—One must not confuse wisdom with intelligence or educa-tion. What our culture has done is to replace God’s revelation as found in the Bible with rationality as determined by men. The problem today is not intellect or information but the lack of godly wisdom. (1 Corinthians 1:20-25; 2 Timothy 3:14-17).
2B. What wisdom is—Wisdom is godliness that is vital, practical, and observable (Psalm 1:1-2; Proverbs 2:6; 1 Kings 3:5-10; Proverbs 4:3-5; Colossians 3:16-17).
2A. THE CONSTRUCTIVE ANSWER (3:13b-18)
1B. Conduct, verse 13b.
2B. Conflict, verses 14-16.
1C. THE PROBLEMS THAT EXISTED BETWEEN BELIEVERS IN THE CHURCH
2C. THE PROHIBITION ON WHAT THEY WERE NOT TO DO
3C. THE PERIL OF EARTHLY WISDOM
4C. THE PRODUCT OF EARTHLY WISDOM
- Focus on glorifying God – You can glorify God by trusting Him, obeying Him, and imitating Him.
- Search your heart (Psalm 139:23-24)
- Seek restoration with gentleness (Colossians 3:12-15; Proverbs 15:1, 16:24; Philippians 4:5)
- Pray for wisdom, prepare your words carefully, listen carefully, choose the right time and place, only speak words that build up and that are connected to love.
