How Is God Dishonored?
Passage: Malachi 2:1–2:9
The overarching theme of Malachi is stated in 3:7, “’Return to Me and I will return to you,’ says the LORD of hosts.” God is calling people to Himself. To turn away from what we may be pursuing and to seek Him. This kind of return requires a turning to and a turning around.
1A. WITH YOUR EARS, LISTEN TO GOD (2:1-3)
1B. Listen to God without delay, verse 1a.
2B. Listen to God because He has spoken, verse 1b.
3B. Listen to God to glorify His name, verse 2.
4B. Listen to God by heeding His rebuke, verse 3.
2A. WITH YOUR HEART, REVERENCE GOD (2:4-5)
1B. Reverence involves work, verse 4.
2B. Reverence involves worship, verse 5.
3A. WITH YOUR LIFE, LIVE IN TRUTH (2:6-9)
1B. Walking in the truth, verses 6-7.
2B. Departing from the truth, verses 8-9.
Psalm 95:7ff is quoted in Hebrews 3 and 4. Each of those passages contains the phrase, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Instead, with your ears listen to God (“hear His voice”), with your heart reverence God (“do not harden your hearts”), and with your life live in truth.
Turn to God and return to God. When you do, you will find a God of grace and mercy.
