Our Clean Hope - 1 Thessalonians 4:6b-8

We arrive at 1 Thessalonians 4:6b-8 as we consider, "Our Clean Hope." Verse 7 states that, “God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.” These verses present three reasons why we are to live clean and holy lives. The first is the vengeance of the Lord (v.6b). There is a coming, future, and certain judgment. This judgment has two sides. One side for those who do not obey and gospel and the other side for those who believe in the gospel (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10). The second reason is the virtue of our calling (v.7). We are to leave uncleanness and live in holiness. Holiness is the result and process of living a consecrated life. The third reason is the value of the Holy Spirit (v.8), whose command we do not reject. The Holy Spirit is the restrainer Who is to control how we live (Ephesians 5:18). The Holy Spirit empowers and enables us to please God (v.1).
