The Mother of Jesus

May 11, 2025

Christian living can be summarized with the word discipleship. The pattern of discipleship includes the practical roles of the Christian family (Titus 2:1-5). The pattern of discipleship carries into the role of a wife and mother as she is discipled by older, spiritually mature women. The goal is that we help one another follow Jesus and this includes our role in the Christian family. This Sunday, we’ll consider three timeless traits exemplified in the mother of Jesus. We’ll learn about her obedience to the Word of God (Luke 1:26-28). The Bible details specific and significant characteristics of Mary’s role in the birth of Jesus. We will also learn of Mary’s faith in the will of God (Luke 1:29,34). Mary was troubled and confused by the message from the angel Gabriel, yet her faith was in God’s will. John 19:25-27 takes us to the scene of Jesus looking down from the cross and seeing His mother. Even as Jesus is the sin-bearer, we see His compassion for His mother and His provision for His mother. On this special day we honor all mothers, Mary is a blessed example of a mother who magnified the Lord.
